Say, when I scale this down to fit in my scene, the links break under the chain's own weight. I read on a forum that this is a problem with chains - they only work when they're of sufficient scale. Do you know a workaround for that? Maybe using the compositor?

Not sure what you mean, when I scale the chain down it works... are you trying to scale the entire scene, just the chain, or just one link in the chain? If you have the chain in the position you want, try making it one object by pressing Cmd J to join all the links and then scaling. If this doesn't answer your question, try watching the tutorial on youtube. Tutor4u is the name of the account.

If that still doesn't work, you could also try scaling everything else up
