You might be able to rig the chain with a rigid body and collider effect from the physics panel. The gears would probably be done with a constraint with the wheels.

Yeah, its probably not very hard in the end. But I don't really have a use to rig it. But if do rig it I will have the blend bookmarked :)

That might work. But it would be very slow. having to simulate it every time.
