SpaceX Dragon

Description

A High-Poly model of the SpaceX Dragon (V1).

The Dragon was the first commercial spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station. It is now regularly used to transport cargo to the ISS.

This is a high poly model (approx 303K polygons), so probably not for game use or animation. As always, textures are packed and must be unpacked prior to use.

Please note that the "SpaceX" logo was created in Blender by me - so it's "Fan Art" for sure, but it's not stolen. If anyone's interested, more pictures can be found on my [Facebook Page](https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.873123859442406.1073741906.345392525548878&type=3).

Enjoy!

Nice work! Are the rivets geometry or normal mapped?

C
ChrisKuhn over 10 years ago

Geometry :) Of course, you could bake them to a normal map if you wanted to... but this way you have the option of keeping them as mesh objects. They really don't take up that many polys.

Like every time it`s a wonderful peace from you. But Blender 2.71 ?? :-)) Thanks for sharing it with us and greetings from Germany.

Eh... I only upgrade occasionally :) I like to build stuff the old fashioned way, and I really don't need anything newer than 2.5x for that. Besides, I'm kinda lazy when it comes to updates:) Enjoy the model !

Thanks. Most SpaceX imagery has been released under Creative Commons Attribution, so one might be ok to reuse a render from this commercially (in a space magazine for instance) - might be worth checking with the SpaceX press office and asking - I'm guessing they'd say "yes".

C
ChrisKuhn over 10 years ago

Maybe, but I released this model NC because I don't want it to be used commercially. Of course, there's about a 0% chance of me actually stopping anyone, but my intention was for it to be used for personal or educational stuff.

All SpaceX imagery is CC0 now.

It's easy to know your work on Blend Swap without clicking on it for the details. As usual, very high quality modeling and texturing.

Also... if you guys don't like free stuff, you can buy it from a guy who ripped off this model and is trying to sell it on Turbosquid :) http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3ds-max-spacex-dragon/962403

Oh man, that's heavy !! What can you do against such guys ? I have seen that isn't the first model from you what he has ripped off.

Absolutely brilliant. My kind of modeling - space stuff. Did you use design drawings or just reference photos to create the model? Will you be doing the manned version?

C
ChrisKuhn over 10 years ago

I used both. Drawings are important to get the dimensions right, but they never tell the whole story about what something looks like :) If I had to pick one or the other, I'd take photos over drawings. No plans to do anymore of these... but you never know.

I REALLY want to use this mesh in a scene i'm making but I can't download it because it says "You do not have enough bandwidth to download this file." I don't know what this means, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me a copy of the file so I can use it

Awesome work! I am going to use it in a "Music Video". Its really just a cool space animation. I will post a link when it is done!

Very impressive, not sure how I missed this asset for so long. I combined the model with a BlenderGuru tutorial on making earth. The result is here: https://i.imgur.com/1UyDCdp.png with attribution in the lower right. I'm thinking of using this as a reference. This is great for small 3d prints, but the rivet holes reak havoc with the subsurf modifier for added geometry on bigger prints

Chris, how do I contact you outside of Blend Swap? Are you on LinkedIn? Facebook? Twitter? My full name is Philippe van Nedervelde. I am easy to find all over the intertubes. Could you please reach out and connect with me? If interested and depending on your rates, I may have some commissioned work for you building a ton of hyper-detailed 3D models of spacecraft.
