Jigsaw Puzzle V2

Description

This is a particle based jigsaw I developed for a personal project.
The image, tile count and coupling shape can be customized. The file contains two scenes, one called Demo, contains the Spring jigsaw as shown in the demo image, the second scene is called Build and is for creating your own jigsaw.

This is not for the faint hearted, there are quite a few steps involved in creating a new jigsaw. I have outlined the instructions as clearly as possible in a packed text file but I recommend downloading the [PDF Instructions](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VLEhhE-6BX3V7dr9ktT0lvynBOMwOruo/view?usp=sharing) as they are easier to follow.(lots of pictures)

* The short of it is:
* Import image as plane
* Adjust tile count
* Set/apply shape keys
* Combine parts
* Apply modifiers
* Separate parts

Be warned,the poly count can get very high,very quick.
Preview images have about 350k verts each.
Materials are good for Eevee or Cycles .(Previews are Cycles)

Update: V2 01/02/21
* Added Demo Scene
* Updated Instructions

Maybe I should 3D print this puzzle XD

J

I never thought of that. I've not worked with 3D printing before. I'd guess it could be optimized for it fairly easy. Let me know if you do, I'd love to see how it would turn out.

Rendering is not working

J
jkon almost 6 years ago

@humorkungenYT, I ran a test today and had no problem rendering in either Cycles or Eevee. If you could expand on your issue a bit I will look into it further. Not meaning to point out the obvious but just in case, there is no camera in the downloaded scene and one needs to be added before rendering out.

Hello jkon, Congratulations on your work, and a big thank you for sharing your file. I am trying to make a puzzle with an image that I cannot adjust to the dimensions. It is OK for Y but not for X. When I apply the « TransferData » modifier, the image becomes slightly distorted. The shapes of the puzzle design become « more rounded ». Is it because my image is not suitable for « Tile » or mishandling on my part? I thank you for your answer. Have a good day. PS: if you want, I can send you a screen printer for clarity.

@blendswap@f-s-w.fr, As long as the imported image plane is scaled to completely cover the puzzle in both X and Y dimensions then the transferdata modifier should have no problem. If the shape of the puzzle pieces is actually changing ("more rounded") then at a guess I'd say the problem is something to do with the steps regarding Shape Keys. I'll try recreate your problem tommorrow(it's late here now) and get back to you. If you could post the file in your google drive or somewhere I can download it, I'll take a look at it.

@blendswap@f-s-w.fr, The "Adjust Shape Keys" stage is very important and I believe is causing your issue.I have made an image showing the steps to complete it correctly - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xBMBigCT8mz0ChIf2zF5sFExwDTl4KBq/view?usp=sharing The "Combine All Assets" stage might cause problems also. I will have to change the text in the blend file as Blender has changed the default selection after performing "Make instances real" from the origional instance to the new objects. For now, please view this second image to see which objects can be deleted - https://drive.google.com/file/d/11vqBIutvcGVf1pEXGLpJyIlDBDhVWISC/view?usp=sharing I hope this works for you.

I am glad to help and delighted it worked for you. I know there are a lot of steps involved in getting a finished puzzle and some of them steps are not easily explained. Take care and be safe.

Hi jkon, Thank you for your response. It's a bit long to set up, but it's worth the detour. Again congratulations for the work provided. Take care too, be safe and good continuation

Hi, thanks for this awesome piece. This is true masterpiece! I just strugle with one important thing. I follow the instructions exactly, everything seems ok, but I still do not see the big image, but a lot of small images in every tile. I still cant figure out what I am doing bad? Could you help me please? It is probably some stupid little mistake. Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi, vitek, I'll open the file tonight to refresh my memory, long time since I looked at it, and then get back to you. Sounds like a data transfer issue.

Hi, Vitek, I can't replicate the problem your having. I've updated the file to better reflect some key command changes in blender recently. I've also added a link to a PDF that outlines the process much clearer. Please take a look at that and if your problem still persists I'll get a copy of your file from you.
