Yes, you definitely should enter this into the contest. While unconventional, it has such utility (and it's public domain; I've used the previous edition lots) and creativity that make it a great example of Blender artwork. It's not an air vehicle per se, but it could be used to create air vehicles and so it's good for the contest.

@jason, there is nothing wrong with this file, no reason to re-upload it from what I see. I downloaded it and opened it just fine. I'm running Blender 2.59 also. I would try and redownload blender and open it from the fresh version and see if that works.

I would go to the Blender Foundation webpage or graphicall. You can find builds for nearly every system.

Will this work with the latest Blender (2.61)?

J
jimftew about 14 years ago

this some sick stuff man, cheers for this, however this particular version don't work with 2.6+ but the others do, but still I've been making some robot test models with shipyard v0.6 and the results are just WOW, basic structures on my part but the possibilities are awesomely positive thanks again bro

G
greyoxide about 14 years ago

I am able to download and open it in 2.614 without any trouble. JIMFTEW could the problem be on your end? There really isn't much that would mess up the opening process, it's basically just straight geometry and 3 materials.

J
jimftew about 14 years ago

yes, it was a problem on my end all better now, awesome, thanks man. "If I was a fly life would be easier, cause flies can tolerate shit" by Me

Used in iPhone game Energy Storm - an arcade game with polarity theme. (inspired by classics R-Type and Ikaruga) Preview http://youtu.be/GfVIeJb4aW8 with credit on the title screen (slide the logo sideways) Thanks again for sharing these fantastic space ship blender models.

Love your modeling skills and thank you for your work Also, I took a ship from one of your older shipyards and added some lights and textures to it as well as opening doors in the cargo area (which is rigged with a single bone to open) and thought I would offer it to you if you were interested in using it or reuploading it with the new additions. Just let me know and I'll get it to you if you want it.

Hey guys kinda new to Blender, ok Very new to blender so gonna ask a newbie question. Have downloaded shipyard 0.7 (freaking awesome design btw) but I can't work out how to separate the layers when I open it up. The ship above opens in a blender file but I can't pull anything from it. Probably just me being a complete noob but can anyone help me with this?

S

O
OnyxIdol about 12 years ago

Great work, and so much variety. It would be great however, if You could disable wire display for future iterations, as I find it makes the models harder to see. Anyway thanks for this :)!

W
whattapancake almost 12 years ago

The models are incredible, but I'm having troubles with the normals. When I export to any format, a good number of the normals on the models are kinda weird. They look perfectly fine in Blender, but in any other program/format, the normals are inverted on several random faces.

K
kevinfishburne over 11 years ago

Always apply negative scales before exporting. Also applying any other modifiers and recalculating the normals prior to export may help. And check for artifacts/intersections caused by any modifiers.

G
greyoxide almost 12 years ago

Hey @whattapancake, sorry I missed your comment. Im willing to bet, your leaving "apply modifiers" checked when exporting. On 90% of the meshes I used the edge split modifier. This will almost certainly mess up the normals in another application.

W
whattapancake over 11 years ago

And 6 months later I finally found this comment, haha. Thanks, I'll check that!

E
ericblender7 almost 12 years ago

this is pretty coooool

K
kevinfishburne over 11 years ago

Just a warning; if you try solidifying some of the models (or beveling), you may get some artifacting. Be sure to take a look at each piece you decide to use and edit it as necessary. I know, general advice. In any case, Shipyard is absolutely outstanding. I still can't believe someone created this and dropped it CC0. Thank you greyoxide. I'm using this for a game I'm making (Sylph) and it has been (and continues to be) invaluable.

First let me say that this is an awesome kit you've pot together here. Second, I noticed that you created wire overlays by having a second identical object with a wire material occupying the same space as the solid material object. This is not a good way to do this since it can result in absolutely horrific artifacts when rendering. A better method is to set the wire material to the same object with a z-offset of around .01 or .02 and put it at the top of the material stack. Same effect but no z-fighting. Also, your render tiles were set to 180x135. They should always be square for faster rendering. This was posted a few years ago so you may have already learned these lessons but it's here for anyone else who may be having issues and not know why.

A
akazlev about 9 years ago

Thank you so much for this! I'm building my own ship (for my scifi story), and it would be an impossible task without all this amazing material you've provided! My only suggestion is if you could add more symmetrical shapes (like the hexagonal tube), e.g. Alcubierre drive rings, various types of domes, rotating habitat modules, for people like me who like to build symmetrical ships; it would enable an even wider range of ship designs as well as making it possible to build space stations and habitats. Awesome work!

Hmmm... doesn't seem to work properly in Blender 2.8 - can't bring up all the parts from different layers to visibility :-( Unless I'm plain doing something wrong?

S
Slarty over 6 years ago

I just tried this in Blender 2.79, and could not find anything except the one big example ship shown in the screenshot above. I am not familiar with Blender layers yet, so could easily be doing something wrong

M

Are you going to update this for blender 2.81?

F
floridarcher_1077229 over 4 years ago

2 years late and all but for those who can't get it to work... Change the editor type to outliner (or split the menu on the right side in half and add it) then toggle the "disable in viewports" filter to on (the icon that looks like a computer monitor) then do whatcha gotsta do. You could also start a new file and append all the meshes/collections, but my guess is you'll still have to toggle that disable in viewports filter. ✌️✌️

Hello there, Don't know if you're still around on BSW but I'll give it a shot. Would you mind me making a new(er) version of Shipyard and sharing it as CC0 too? You will be credited as the original creator and there will be a link pointing to this page. Please let me know. Thanks in advance! DimitrisC
