Willys Jeep

Description

A US Willys Jeep, pretty much fully textured. War themes aren't really my bag, but this is a bit of an icon in histroy so I thought I'd give it a go. Hope you guys like it!

Jay.

Excellent! Only thing I can pick on are the tyres-- that dirty they still look brand new and unused.

This is absolutely amazing work. The modeling is great, the posing is excellent, and the texturing is superb. Honestly, I can't find a single thing wrong with it.

Thanks for your generous comments guys, it makes giving it away really worthwhile! With regards to the tyres, I thought they were quite muddy already, I textured the jeep with the idea of a dusty/dirty environment. I guess if I'd have done a more wet/muddy look, then the textures might have been a bit more pronounced on the tyres. Jay :)

Oops! first time I posted it didn't appear, now I've started repeating myself... I do that in life anyway, so might as well stick with it ;)

Jay: I did all I could to find /something/ to pick at. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the tyres or the dirt on them. What you could possibly tweak, is entering sculpt mode and deform the tyres some small amount. That way they will look like they've been used for hundreds of miles. Again, excellent work and thanks for sharing-- I will be opening this files many times.

Thanks for the clarification Mats on what you meant about the tyres, I get you - the tyre tread could be softer, less defined - warn etc. I'll take note of that in future - thought my monitor calibration was off for the minute ;) I was actually tempted to flatten the bottom of the tyres when I modelled them as tyres aren't usually so full of air, especially with the weight of the jeep. But I thought it a bad idea just in case someone wanted to animate it. I feel encouraged to upload some more models now :)

Hey CoreyS, feel free to have a play with the lattice, although a lattice deformer is better for warping the whole of a mesh - Basically a cage around your model where you add as many horizontal/vertical segments so you can squish and stretch your model you parented it to - saves you having to move individual verts manually - great for turning a tube into a toilet for example. With the tyres it would of been better for me to have made their groves less pronounced when I modelled them - its not a major issue though - if I could be bothered I still have the files for each major part of the vehical. Could also turn down the subsurf level too. :)

Thanks for the heads up Matthew, although I caught it last night on twitter. Really good, for one to see how the Tomato branch is coming on, and secondly cool to see something I created in someone elses VFX. Just glad the nomad robot didn't stand on the Jeep at the end, I'd have been devastated!

Thanks for all the comments so far regarding the Willys jeep, it's been pretty popular - I guess it is a memorable hostorical icon after all! Just downloaded my prize "Blender-25-HOTSHOT" Ebook, very pleased - wish it was a 'real' book - but then I' always prefer hard copies, but then hey I didn't enter the contest just to win anyway, it was really fun just taking part - I hope more people get involved in the next contest! Jay. :)

Thanks for your comment Ajbowen88, this was my first real attempt at texturing in blender. I'm not sure that I did it the "right" way, but the outcome was all right I guess. The texturing did get easier towards the end once I'd spend a number of hours at it, you get used to the workflow I guess. Having a deadline for the competition helped a lot though ;)

yea i agree deadlines make you learn stuff faster lol. if you dont mind me asking what textures did you use especially for the glass... did you make them? again, still amazed!

J
Jay-Artist almost 14 years ago

Ajbowen88, yes I created the textures by hand - the window glass material took me a while to work out at the the time, it's something I hadn't done before again and I found the multiple materials a bit confusing in blender. The texture itself was just a few free random PS grunge brushes I picked up with a web search - they're so useful for this kind of stuff, It's really worth hunting down a good selection of them, you never know when you might need them ;)
