Venator Star Destroyer

Description

This is a little project I did last summer, to develop my modeling skills. For a long time, it was just sitting on my hard drive, but after a request for the file on Google+, I decided I may as well share it here.

The objects/materials are named appropriately, and organized into layers (armor, command tower, turrets, etc). The turrets are rigged to pivot and track targets, and everything is parented to an empty named "Venator", for easy animation.

Textures were hand-made in GIMP, some of them I made by tracing over the UV layout. I also made the planet in GIMP, but the space backdrop is a NASA image.

The scene is set up to get the preview image by default, just open the file and hit F12.

Technical details:

444,656 vertices

Layer 1: Edges / side hangar bays

Layer 2: Main plating

Layer 3: Center ridge / main hangar

Layer 4: Command tower / lights

Layer 5: Detail thingies :)

Layer 6: Engines

Layer 7: Turret wells

Layer 8: Turrets

Layer 9: Bombardment cannon

Layer 11 has some "greebles" for the main plating; but they are disabled in the render, because they turned out to be superfluous. I included them anyway, though, because some of you might want to play around with them.

Layer 12: Side guns (actually from Greyoxide's excellent "Shipyard", v0.5 I think)

Layer 17: "Greebles" for the turret wells

Layers 18 & 19: Lamps, for the engines and hangars

Layer 20: Cameras and scene lighting

Hope this file is useful to someone, and Happy Blending!

Coolest model I've ever seen! Looks exactly like it does in the movies/TV series.

Awesome job. Lots of fun to be had. Thank you. I wonder how to extend the engine flares out side the engines themselves and animate the power levels for FTL type shots.

The engine glare settings are in the composite nodes, if you play with the settings on the "glare" nodes, you can get some different results. The first glare node has a threshold of 3.0, which isolates the engines (emitting at ~10), if you turn up the "mix" to 0, it will slightly increase the glow power. Blendercookie's lightsaber tutorial might be the effect you're looking for, also: http://cgcookie.com/blender/2010/03/09/rendering-a-light-saber/ (this method would require a little bit more modifications to the scene) To animate the power levels, this is how I would do it: 1. Select any of the engines, go to the textures panel in the properties window. 2. Select the "Emitter Emit" texture, and scroll down to the influence tab. 3. Under "emit", change that value to whatever you want (for anything above 1.00, you need to type it in manually) 4. Set keyframes on it by hovering over it and hitting "i", then manipulate the keyframes as per normal You can also (I believe) animate any of the nodes this way. Hope this helps!

This is a really cool model, especially for my nerdy self. Just gotta ask what did you model this off as there many adaptations. As I want to add moving hangar doors and what not but there will be a couple things clipping.

Hi there! This is by far the best venator model I've seen. I'm having some problems with the textures however. When I extract the folder, it seems like a lot of the textures aren't there.
