He's a monster, but he's soft - I think it works well :)

Having had a closer look at this monster - I'd love to know how you achieved the detail in his expression. What technique did you use? Can you point me towards a good tutorial to learn this method? I expected that maybe you used bump maps, but you don't seem to have used any image textures...?
