Description
The blend contains a chibi girl I modeled for testing my 3D to 2D sprite rendering techniques for 2D video game asset production.
Non-photo realistic rendering presents a unique set of challenges compared to photo realistic rendering. Rendering at extremely low resolutions only complicates the process. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of reference material for these less popular styles of rendering. It is my hope that by sharing this you can learn from my techniques and more people become interested in non-photorealistic rendering!
Rendered with Freestyle and Cycles. You will need a Freestyle build for this to render properly.

why blender keeps crashing after loading this blend?
"Rendered with Freestyle and Cycles. You will need a Freestyle build for this to render properly" This must be it, happened to me too. Crash on click.
I've downloaded blender 2.5 and it's all ok
This is amazing.
just append the model to one of your existing blends, you won't get the colors tho
I know It's asking for a lot, I'd love it if you made a youtube video tutorial... I'm trying to understand how you've rendered this, but am new to blender and 3d models...
For anyone not getting a nice stroked version when rendering, I had to disable "Sky" on the FreestyleScene Renderlayer. I still don't get the same lighting (Chibi's hair is darker than embedded version) but it's better than before. Maybe someone has the ultimate fix :)
This is fantastic work, thank you for sharing. I'm also very interested in a 2D asset creation pipeline that uses 3D rendering, and it's very hard to find information on the subject or other folks who are doing it. If you could share any other information you have on the subject, resources, etc, that would be great.
I also noticed that the specific detail of this 3d model. for example, her eyes. can you make a youtube tutorial for this? Your technique is absolutely amazing.
How about you make a written tutorial and this might lead someone else to make a youtube tutorial for this. :)
Looks great but in the latest versions the freestyle ink layer seems to be covered by the rest of the render, it flashes briefly before the end of the render and then disappears I'm trying to dl a 2.65 freestyle from graphicall but I'm having some trouble, but perhaps it's a simple fix to update it to the latest blender version... :)
For those not getting the desired effect, try the following: - Select the second scene (FreestyleScene) - Go to "Render Layers" - Deactivate "Sky" under "Include:" It seems that the gray background is multiplied into the picture which results in a darker render lacking some of the crisp lines.
Can you make a Tut.
I know this is a very old thread, but does anyone know how to export this with a transparent background?
good
