A desert scene with dried out ground and some particle grass blades.

And this is the Displace map to create the clefts in the ground:

Here are the Modifier setup for the ground:

1. Subsurf Modiefire to subdivide the geometry.
2. Displace Modiefire to deform the geometry.
3. Smooth Modiefire for smoothing out the geometry a bit.

Great work. On each modifier you will notice a apply button. This will apply the modifier to your mesh. handy for the mirror modifier.
