Battleship Tirpitz

Description

High-poly model of the Tirpitz, the second Bismark class battleship built by Germany in world war 2. This blend contains the ship, textured and the main/secondary turrets rigged, and the ocean I used in my renders. I couldn't include the sky texture due to licencing, so to get a good render you will need to find one. Hope you have fun with it! :)

Shadows are a bit glitchy though.

Thanks for the feedback! In what way are the shadows glitchy?

In the middle of the hull it looks slightly crumpled.

That is because it is! That is actually the armoured belt above the waterline. It stops halfway up the side of the hull, so there is a crease there.

Wow.. I just went and trashed a whole scene file because I thought my custom build broke the mesh. It didn't occur to me how truly accurate the design was until I googled up a pic. You can color me impressed now sir...

The detail in this model is impressive down to bolts and rigging. It would be interesting to know from your perspective what were the major lessons learned from creating the model.

Probably the biggest thing I learned is that I should have used subdivision surfaces less, at least for parts of the ship it made sense to do so. This is because I ended up with a very high poly count because so many polys were wasted, so I had slower render times and a sluggish viewport.

You can use a tool called Multiple Resolutions to fix that issue. It lets you set diferent resolutions on any object depending on what you are doing (fex the viewport may have ress 1 and the render will still use resolution 4) Thus saving a ton of unwanted/un-needed polygons before the actual render.

I tried to do a 10 samples render of this an my computer just up and died XD It's so detailed, I love it. I would love to see a time lapse of this being created, but judging by the detail, recording the whole process would have resulted in... large... file sizes. Thanks for sharing this, I'll check back when I've got a new GPU.

You have taken my breath away! "Epic" only begins to describe it. The vast amount of detail is incredible, and very appropriate for such a large vessel. (But if you download this, expect to wait a lot!) Your modelling skill is astonishing. I hope to see everything you do! Thank you!

EPICLY DONE! After you read HMS Ulysses by Alistair Maclean, you want to see what kind of vessel can bring unsurmountable fear in men. Now I know why the Royal Navy was afraid of the Tirpitz! Admiral Von Tirpitz!
