RedDeer

Description

A model of a red deer stag, with particle hair and a full rack. Not rigged but should be suitable for animation. Basic features & musculature included but suitable for higher-level detailing & normal mapping if desired. Painted UV-mapped texture intended only as an "undercoat" for the particle hair, so repainting may be needed if hair isn't.

My intent was to have the particle hair pick up more diffuse color form the undercoat that seems to show in the renders, so that's an area that could use some attention of you want more variation in the hair color..

Freakishly realistic. I'm already preparing a roadkill version.

@chip, great model, thanks for sharing, you should also be honored that HJmedia is doing a roadkill/autopsy scene. @HJM, can't wait to see it.

Really nice model. I have some observations though. I don't know what subspecies, or what age your model represents (apparently not a full adult), but I think that proportions could be improved. I think the neck should be slightly longer, the cheeks less broad, the ears smaller and the antlers more spread toward the sides. Also the body could be less broad over all. These are just details. It could be the case that you modeled an individual that looks just like that. Whatever the case, your model is totally believable as it is. Just in case you wonder, I checked the file, not just the render.

Simply fantastic. Can you tell us where you learnt to model animals so well?

Thanks for the kind comments, folks. Happy to hear the model is useful, that's the intent. @Corvus: I had to create my own ortho references from imperfect sources found on the web, so some of the proportions may not be ideal, but they do match well with the seven or eight shots I have in my library for red deer. There's a lot of individual variation. And the great thing about BlendSwap & the CC license is you can adjust things to suit your preferences perfectly! I rather expect that in most cases. @Tek5826: It's not so much a matter of modeling animals (this is one of only handful I've ever done) as about modeling to a reference in general, be it organic or mechanical. As an illustrator (2D) I learned the value of references long before starting to do 3D work, so I use them constantly now as well. I have some knowledge of animal anatomy that is useful but rely in refs to make sure it's as accurate as need be for a specific animal species and a specific model. The modeling skills I then apply are a matter of practice, practice, practice. I've done a number of human models so that helps build the skills that highly "organic" forms can benefit from.

Hi, I used this deer in my Christmas iPhone app "Speedy Santa". I rigged and did a simple run/pulling animation. it turned out to make the game. Many thanks Karl. Kind Regards Dean

It's excellent. I will greatly enjoy it, and won't piss anybody off about killing it or anything. ~Shiftroperr

Hi, I'm filming a scene that features a Scion running over a deer, is it ok if I use this deer for that scene?

I'm pretty sure this model has missing textures - trying to open them results in empty shaders - am I missing something or does it not work in new versions of Blender?

Same for me here.

the textures are in the file but there is not linked to the material (in 2011 there was no EEVEE or even cycles?)
